Softball Swamps MIT In NEWMAC Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 27, 2004 – Springfield College erupted for 17 runs and 22 hits, and rode sensational pitching to sweep MIT in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both team on Saturday.

In game one, junior hurler Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) fired a three-hit shutout as SC rolled to an 8-0 victory. Brucker, who has won all five of her starts this season, improved to 5-1. She also drove in two runs.

Junior rightfielder Laurie Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the Pride’s offense, and junior catcher Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.) collected three hits and drove in two runs.

Sophomore Brittany Dielemans (Middlebury, Conn.) completed the sweep with a three-hitter in the nightcap as SC won, 9-1.

Dielemans struck out six in the win. Freshman centerfielder Katie Parmalee (Norwalk, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Sophomore shortstop Caitlyn McGaughey (South Windsor, Conn.) had two hits and scored twice.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli

Julie Perrelli Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
