MUNCIE, Ind. - Springfield College junior swing hitter
Brandon Mueller (Barttlett, Ill.) totaled 61 points (56 kills, two aces, three blocks) in two matches against Ball State over the weekend, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals topped the Pride in both contests.
Mueller was credited with 40 points (37 kills, one ace, two solo blocks) Sunday (Feb. 1), but the Pride fell, 3-2 (30-22, 31-29, 27-30, 28-30, 15-12). Senior opposite
Clay Spiegel (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in 18 points (16 kills, four block assists). Ball State senior Jary Delgado led the way for the Cardinals as he tallied 25 points (24 kills, two block assists).
Springfield received 14.5 points from junior opposite
Matt Smith (Midlothian, Va.) on 12 kills, one ace, and three block assists, but the Pride came up short 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 28-30, 30-25) on Saturday (Jan. 31). Nick Meyer (Cinninnati, Ohio) paced Ball State with 19 points (16 kills, one ace, two blocks).
Springfield (1-2), ranked No.1 in the latest AVCA Division III poll, takes on No. 2 Juniata (Pa.) this Friday at 7:00 pm in Blake Arena. It will be a rematch of last season’s national title match, when the Pride won its third-straight title, 3-1 (27-30, 31-29, 30-24, 30-27).
