Boxscore
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - Jan. 29, 2005 - Despite a team-high 18 kills from senior All-American outside hitter
Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) and a career-high 12 kills from freshman outside hitter
Neil Starzynski (Frontier, N.Y.) Springfield College men’s volleyball team fell, 3-1 (32-30, 22-30, 30-22, 30-23), to George Mason University in its Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait division opener this afternoon in Blake Arena.
Springfield, ranked No. 3 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll, received 41 assists from freshman setter
Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.), but the Pride fell to 1-4 (0-1 EIVA Tait) on the season.
The Patriots, ranked No. 15 in the latest USA TODAY Division I Coaches poll, were paced by freshman
Hudson Bates (Richmond, Va.) who was credited with a match-high 21 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Junior outside hitter
Shaun Powell (Toronto, Canada) added 19 kills and senior outside hitter
Felix Campos (Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico) had 10 kills for the Patriots which improved to 4-0 (1-0 EIVA Tait) on the season.
Game one was a nip and tuck battle throughout. Springfield built a four-point lead, 15-11, after an attack error by the Patriots and forcing George Mason to spend a timeout. The Patriots battled back to tie the match, 26-26, after Shekell was whistled for a ball handling error. SC eventually fell behind, 30-29, but Starzynski, who had six kills in the game, tied the score at 30-30. George Mason picked up the next two points and the game-one win.
Game two was tied, 3-3, until the Pride went on 11-5 run sparked by three kills and a block from Starzynski. Springfield never let the Patriots within five points of the lead for the duration of the second game. Mueller paced the Pride with seven kills as SC rolled, 30-22.
Game three seemed to be a carbon copy of the first game as both teams traded the lead back and forth until the midway point with the score was tied, 15-15. The Patriots went on a 15-7 run including seven kills for Bates and six for Powell. The Pride received three kills apiece from Mueller, Starzynski, and freshman outside hitter
Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.).
George Mason took control of the match in game four, going out to an early five-point lead, 15-10. The Pride never seemed to get any momentum as the Patriot lead eventually ballooned to seven, 25-18, despite four kills from both Mueller and senior middle blocker
Ricky Albano (Spencerport, N.Y.).
Springfield returns to action next weekend, taking on EIVA Tait rival Penn State in the first round of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic Friday (Feb. 4) at 8 p.m. Reigning Division I national champion Brigham Young University takes on Ball State in the other first round match-up at 6 p.m. The consolation match is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. while the championship match will be at 8 p.m.
