No. 3 Men's Volleyball Edged By No. 1 Juniata in EIVA Semifinals

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - April 9, 2004 - Junior swing hitter Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) compiled 18 kills and 11 digs, but top-ranked Juniata outlasted Springfield College, 3-2, (30-28, 30-21, 23-30, 30-32, 15-13) in the Eastern Intercolligate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division III Championship semifinals Friday night . The defeat ended the Pride's bid at a fourth national championship.

SC (7-15) also received contributions from senior swing hitters Chris Hosley (Nassau, N.Y.) and Clay Spiegel (San Diego, Calif.) who added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore middle blocker Nick Beer (Clovis, Calif.) was credited with 10 kills on 14 attempts for a .643 hitting percentage.

Brian Dinning (Pittsburgh, Pa.) totaled a match-high 22 kills to lead Juniata (14-6) to the win. The Eagles defeated NYU on Saturday night in the EIVA Division III Championship match and will represent the EIVA in the Molten National Championships hosted by Eastern Mennonite (Va.) University.

The semifinal was a re-match of last year's Molten National Championship match which SC won, 3-1, for its third-straight national championship. Springfield's four national titles overall is the most by any Division III program.

The Pride will travel back to Juniata for its EIVA Div. I first round match against the Eagles on Saturday, April 24.
