SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 16, 2004 – Despite a match-high 19 kills from Springfield College junior swing hitter
Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill), No. 2 Juniata (Pa.) College upset the No. 1 Pride, 3-1 (30-32, 30-24, 30-28, 30-28) in a rematch of last winter’s Division III National Championship match this afternoon in Blake Arena.
Juniata (5-3, 3-2 EIVA Tait Division) senior middle blocker Kenny Eiser (Doylestown, Pa.) led all scorers with 22 points (17 kills, 1 block solo, 8 block assists), while senior outside hitter Ryan Genova (Reading, Pa.) was credited with 16 points (15 kills, 2 block assists).
The Eagles, which out-blocked the Pride 36-15 in the match, dropped the first game, 32-30, before sweeping the next three.
Freshman middle blocker
Nick Beer (Clovis, Calif.) added 15 points (11 kills, 1 solo block, 4 block assists) for SC (4-4, 2-2 EIVA Tait Division).
In last winter’s national championship game, No. 2 SC upset No. 1 Juniata 3-1 (27-30, 31-29, 30-24, 30-27) in Huntington, Pa., to win its unprecedented third-straight national championship and fourth overall. The Eagles won the national title in 1998.
