SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 20, 2004 --Springfield College junior swing hitter Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) recorded match highs with 29.5 points and 25 kills but Penn State held off the Pride, 3-1 (30-21, 31-33, 30-25, 30-26), to advance to the championship match of the 2004 Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic tonight in Blake Arena at Springfield College.

The Nittany Lions (8-4 overall), who are ranked No. 12 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Men’s Volleyball Division I/II Poll, take on No. 8 Cal-Irvine at 8 p.m. on Saturday. In the consolation match, the Pride (4-5), which is the top-ranked squad in Division III, faces Ohio State at 6 p.m.

Penn State sophomore outside hitter Matt Proper (Guys Mills, Pa.) had a big night in the win with 22 points (18 kills, six blocks). Sophomore setter Dan O’Dell (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded 57 assists, seven digs and six blocks, and junior middle hitter Keith Kowal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 13 kills on 20 attempts (.600 attack percentage).

For SC, freshman Robert Soris (Niskyuna, N.Y.) had 59 assists and senior opposite Clay Speigel (San Diego, Calif.) registered 17 points (14 kills, .407 attack percentage).

California-Irvine senior All-American outside hitter Jimmy Pelzel (Lake Forest, Calif.) registered 23.5 points, including 20 kills, to lead the No. 8 Anteaters past Ohio State, 3-1 (30-28, 27-30, 30-20, 30-24) in the opening match of the Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic tonight.

The Anteaters (7-8) move into Saturday’s championship match at 8 p.m. against either Penn State or host Springfield College, the three-time defending Division III national champions. The Buckeyes (7-5) will play in the consolation match at 6 p.m.

Pelzel, who now has 1,414 kills, closed within four kills of Cal-Irvine’s all-time record of 1,419 held by Erick Helenihi, who recorded 1,418 from 1999 to 2002. Pelzel was one of four Anteaters to reach double figures in points tonight. Freshman outside hitter Matt Webber (Brentwood, Calif.) had 23 points and tied a school record with six service aces, and Kyle Weichert (San Diego, Calif.) registered 16 points (10 kills, nine total blocks). Freshman middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.) added 15 points (13 kills, .474 attack percentage).

For Ohio State, sophomore outside hitter Andy Cole (Glendale, Wisc.) had 18 points (16 kills) and sophomore outside hitter Mark Greaves (Fenton, Mo.) added 16 points (14 kills, four block assists).
