Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 22, 2005 - Springfield College senior All-American Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) totaled 17 kills but it was Division I Saint Francis (Pa.) University downing the Pride, 3-0 (38-36, 30-23, 30-25) in men’s volleyball action this evening in Blake Arena.

St. Francis senior outside hitter Brandon Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the way for the Red Flash (1-4), compiling a team-high 14 kills and a .476 hitting percentage, while junior setter Josh Springer made 45 assists.

Freshman Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.) racked up a career-high 10 kills, while sophomore setter Robert Soris (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was credited with 39 assists for the Pride (1-3).

The Red Flash got off to a fast start in game one going on a 7-1 run, but the Pride clawed its way back into the contest behind 10 kills from Mueller and eventually took a 23-22 lead after a kill from sophomore setter Robert Soris (Niskyuna, N.Y.). The score continued to seesaw back and forth until Kelly registered back-to-back kills for St. Francis giving game one to the Red Flash, 38-36.

Both teams started slowly in game two, but the Red Flash forced the Pride to spend an early time out after sophomore middle blocker Brent Way (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was credited with back-to-back kills, pushing the Red-Flash lead to 10-6. SC stayed within striking distance, but three-straight attack errors by the Pride gave St. Francis a 23-17 lead and control of game two.

St. Francis jumped out a 15-10 lead to start game three and didn’t allow the Pride to come within five points the rest of the way. With the win the Red Flash picked up their first victory of the season.

SC returns to action next Saturday (Jan. 29) at 3:00 p.m. to open the EIVA-Tait conference portion of its schedule versus Division I George Mason University.
