Men's Volleyball comes up short at Rutgers-Newark
NEWARK, N.J.,February 13, 2004 – Springfield College junior swing hitter Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) totaled 22 points (20 kills, 1 service ace, 2 block assists), as the Pride took the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders the distance but came up short 3-2 (30-32, 30-25, 30-18, 27-30, 15-10) in an EIVA Tait division match Friday night.
Freshman setter Robert Soris (Niskyuna, N.Y.) added 56 assists for Springfield (3-3, 1-1 EIVA Tait). Junior outside hitter Matt Smith (Midlothian, Va.) contributed 13.5 points (12 kills, 1 service ace, 1 block assist) for the Pride, the three-time defending Division III National Champions.
Rutgers-Newark (7-4, 4-1 EIVA Tait), was led by sophomore outside hitter Byron Goff (Mechanicsville, Va.) and his match-high 24 points (22 kills, 1 service ace, 2 block assists).
Springfield returns to action Saturday (Feb. 14) when it hosts George Mason at 4:30 p.m., and Division III No. 2 Juniata on Monday (Feb. 16) at 2:00 p.m. Both matches are EIVA-Tait Division contests.
