No. 3 Men's Volleyball comes up short twice in Western Pa. swing

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Feburary 26, 2005 - The No. 3 Springfield College Pride men’s volleyball team completed the first two matches of a season-long seven-match road trip last weekend as it came up short in a pair of EIVA-Tait matches against Division I No. 4 Penn State, 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-27), and Division III No. 1 Juniata, 3-1 (27-30, 30-24, 30-22, 34-32).

Even though the Pride (4-9, 1-5 EIVA Tait) got seven kills from senior All-American outside hitter Brandon Mueller (Barlett, Ill.) and senior middle blocker Matt Smith (Midlothian, Va.), Penn State (14-2, 5-0) was able to extend its winning streak to 14 matches last Saturday (Feb. 26) at University Park, Pa.

Smith compiled his seven kills on ten swings with only a single error for a .600 hitting percentage.

Despite 14 kills from both Mueller and freshman outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.) the No. 3 ranked Pride dropped a four-game match to EIVA-Tait Rival Juniata, last Friday (Feb. 25).

Sophomore Kevin Lail (Clovis, Calif.) was credited with 12 kills and freshman setter Chris Shekell (Rochester, N.Y.) dished out 49 assists, but the No. 1 Eagles, who had a .409 team hitting percentage, had five different players with at least 10 kills and 61 assists from senior setter Ricky Ziegler.
