Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.) the No. 3 Springfield College Men’s Volleyball team fell to No. 2 NYU in EIVA-Tait action, 3-2 (28-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-26, 15-10) this evening in Blake Arena.
Four Violets totaled double digit in kills led by sophomore outside hitter
Macnair Sillick (Fairport, N.Y.) who was credited with 20. Senior setter
Leeor Alon (Holon, Israel) dished out 67 assists for NYU.
In game one, Springfield built a four-point lead, 6-2, after three consecutive NYU attacking errors. The Pride built its lead to as many as seven, 25-18, led by Palumbo and Mueller who had six and five kills in the game respectively. The Violets battled back, going on a 7-0 run to tie the game, but Springfield was able to recover and go on a 5-3 run to end the game sparked by a pair of Palumbo kills.
The Violets took an early lead in game two, 15-10, and never let the Pride within three points of the lead until Springfield sophomore outside hitter
Kevin Lail (Clovis, Calif.) got a kill to cut the NYU lead to two, 29-27, but it was as close as the Pride would get.
Game three was a nip and tuck contest throughout. Neither team could get an edge on the scoreboard until senior middle blocker
Jacob Voorhies (Rochester, N.Y.) got a kill to give Springfield a three point edge, 24-21. Springfield finished the game on a 6-4 run punctuated by a pair of Palumbo kills.
Neither team could get a foothold on game four until, with the game tied 20-20, the Violets went on a 10-6 run sparked by five kills from Sillick to knot the match at two games apiece.
The momentum of the deciding game was still up in the air with the game tied, 3-3, but the Violets put together a 10-4 help in much part to three kills from freshman outside hitter
William MacFarland (Solana Beach, Calif.),who had 15 kills for the match. Springfield made a late 3-2 run, but it wasn’t enough.
Springfield closes out its nine-match home stand tomorrow night against Stevens Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the Pride and the Ducks.
