No. 1 Juniata College Holds Off No. 3 Men's Volleyball, 3-2

Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April. 1, 2005 - Springfield College senior All-American Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) registered a match-high 20 kills, while senior All-American libero Eduardo Stawinski (San Juan, P.R.) led the way with 27 digs, but it was No. 1 Juniata College holding off the No. 3 Pride, 3-2 (30-22, 30-27, 26-30, 28-30, 15-12) in men’s volleyball action this evening in Blake Arena.

Juniata (14-6, 8-3 EIVA-Tait) sophomore opposite Nathanael Ocasio led the Eagle attack with 16 kills, while senior setter Ricky Ziegler was credited with 53 assists in the victory.

The Eagles flew out of the gate in game one building a six-point, 19-13, lead after a block from Ziegler forcing a Pride timeout. The timeout did little to curb the Eagle momentum as Juniata never let SC within five points of the lead and cruised to the game-one win, 30-22.

Juniata continued its dominance at the beginning of game two, building a six-point lead, 10-4. The Pride clawed its way back into the game after going on a 7-2 run capped by a kill from freshman outside hitter Eric Palumbo (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.) that brought SC within a point, 22-21. Juniata then went on an 8-6 run to take game two.

Game three is where the Pride found its stride. SC was able to take the early lead, 16-12, forcing Juniata to spend a timeout. The break allowed the Eagles to recover and tie the score, 19-19, after another Ziegler block. However, Springfield wouldn’t be denied as the Pride went on an 11-7 run highlighted by four Mueller kills. Springfield freshman outside hitter Dave Smietana (Buffalo, N.Y.) was credited with three kills on seven attempts for the game for a .429 hitting percentage.

Game four was a nip and tuck contest throughout, as neither team could pull ahead by more then two points. Eventually, with the game hanging in balance, the Pride took over, behind a kill from senior All-American Ricky Albano (Spencerport, N.Y.) and a solo block from senior middle blocker Jacob Voorhies (Churchville-Chili, N.Y.).

The Eagles seemed to have game five put away, jumping out to a four-point, 6-2, lead. The Pride roared back though with a 6-2 run of its own, sparked by a pair of kills from sophomore outside hitter Kevin Lail (Clovis, Calif.), that tied the game, 8-8. Juniata closed the game out with a 7-4 run led by sophomore outside hitter Glenn DeHaven, who had a pair of kills and a block assist during the run.

SC wraps up the regular season, Saturday (April 2), hosting Rutgers-Newark at 7:00 p.m. in Blake Arena.
