No. 1 Men's Volleyball Defeats George Mason, 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 14, 2004 – Springfield College junior swing hitter Brandon Mueller (Bratlett, Ill) compiled 28.5 points (25 kills, 2 service aces, 3 block assists) to lead the Pride over George Mason University, 3-1 (30-16, 30-28, 29-31, 30-25), in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait-Division action this evening in Blake Arena.

Freshman setter Robert Soris (Niskayuna, N.Y.) added 44 assists for Springfield (4-3, 2-1 EIVA Tait), which defeated the Patriots for the first time ever. Junior middle blocker Ricky Albano (Spencerport, N.Y.) was credited with 11.5 points (7 kills, 1 service ace, 1 solo block, 5 assisted blocks) for SC, ranked No. 1 in the latest AVCA Division III poll.

The Pride hit a combined .491 as a team for the match, including a blistering .632 in the first game.

Junior outside hitter Felix Campos (Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico) led George Mason (0-6, 0-1 EIVA Tait) with 26.5 points (24 kills, 1 service ace, 1 solo block, 1 assisted block).

George Mason defeated the Pride twice last season, including a first-round 3-0 sweep in the EIVA Tournament.

Springfield returns to action Monday (Feb. 16) when it hosts Division III No. 2 Juniata (Pa.) College in a 2:00 p.m. rematch of last season’s Division III National Championship match, won by the Pride.
