No. 4 BYU, No. 6 Penn State Advance In Volleyball Hall Of Fame-Morgan Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 4, 2005 –Senior middle hitter Keith Kowal hit .636 with eight kills and nine blocks as Penn State defeated Springfield College, the third-ranked Division III team in the nation, 3-0, (30-28, 30-12, 30-24) in the 2005 Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic tonight at Springfield College’s Blake Arena.

The Nittany Lions (6-2), who totaled 30 blocks tonight, square off with defending national-champion Brigham Young (7-3) in Saturday’s championship match at 8 p.m. The Cougars swept Ball State, 3-0, in the first match of the night. The Cardinals (3-4) play the Pride (1-5, 0-2 EIVA) in the consolation match at 6 p.m.

SC freshman outside hitter Eric Palumbo had 14 kills, and senior All-American Brandon Mueller added 10 kills.

The Nittany Lions squeaked out a 30-28 victory in a back-and-forth game one despite seven kills and a .455 hitting percentage by SC’s Palumbo. The Pride led by two, 16-14, after a service ace by Mueller. Penn State responded by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 20-18 lead. Kowal gave the Nittany Lions a 19-18 edge with a kill then earned a block assist along with junior outside hitter Matt Proper off an attack by Palumbo for a two-point Penn State lead. Clinging to a 25-24 advantage, Penn State took advantage of two SC service aces followed by kills from Kowal and Proper to win the game.

Sophomore opposite Alex Gutar had six of his 14 kills and hit .600 in game two as Penn State posted a 30-12 win. Leading 9-6 in the second game, the Nittany Lions used a 14-3 run for the victory. Gutar sparked the run with a kill to make it 10-6, then two-straight SC attack errors followed by a service ace from Penn State junior setter Dan O’Dell to give the Nittany Lions a 13-6 lead.

The Pride nearly erased a seven-point lead in the third game but Penn State closed with a 5-1 run to win 30-24. SC, which trailed 16-9, closed to within 24-22 on a kill by Mueller, then after a Penn State point, he made it 25-23 with another kill. At 26-24, Kowal and Proper teamed for a block on a Palumbo attack to make it 27-24, then Proper recorded a kill for a four-point lead. At match point, Kowal and Proper blocked another Palumbo attack.

BYU 3, Ball State 0
Brigham Young junior middle blocker Victor Batista hit .750 and had 10 kills as the fourth-ranked Cougars defeated Ball State, 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-23) in the opening match of the 2005 Volleyball Hall of Fame-Morgan Classic tonight at Springfield College’s Blake Arena.

Batista shared the team high in kills with senior opposite Casey Patterson, who also had 10 kills and logged a .562 attack percentage. Junior setter Rob Neilson added 37 assists, and freshman outside hitter Ivan Perez had eight kills and four digs.

The Cardinals were led by sophomore Nick Meyer and junior Luis Castera, who both totaled 10 kills. Ball State hit just .091 in the match compared to BYU’s .333.

In the game one, BYU broke open a 12-10 game with a 6-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. Two of Batista’s six kills came during the run, and Neilson had a service ace for the 17th point.

Patterson and senior middle blocker Michael Burke both had five kills in a 30-27 Cougar victory in the second game. The Cardinals held a 21-17 lead after a kill by Bastera, but the Cougars responded by reeling off nine of the next 10 points to grab a 26-22 advantage. BYU took the lead on blocks by Burke and Perez off an attack by Ball State’s Evan Casey, then Burke registered a solo block on an attack by Andrew Braley to give BYU a 22-21 lead, its first since 7-6.

In the final game, the Cougars led wire-to-wire in a 30-22 win. Paterson hit .556 with five kills.
