No. 3 Men's Volleyball Tops No. 1 Juniata; Falls To Penn State
HUNTINGDON Pa., April 2, 2004 – Junior swing hitter Brandon Mueller (Bartlett, Ill.) totaled 15 kills pushing No. 3 Springfield College past No. 1 Juniata College, 3-1 (30-24, 30-27, 25-30, 30-28), in a rematch of the 2003 Division III national championship game, Friday night at Juniata.
Springfield (7-14, 4-8 EIVA Tait) also received 17 digs from junior libero Eduardo Stawinski (San Juan, Puerto Rico), as senior opposite Chris Hosley (Nassau, N.Y.) added 12 kills for the Pride.
Last April, Springfield won the 2003 National Championship game, 3-1, at Juniata over the Eagles for SC’s unprecedented third-straight national title.
Springfield also took on Penn State over the weekend. The Nittany Lions, ranked No. 9 in the latest AVCA Coaches Div. I poll, topped Springfield in four games (30-18, 30-21, 41-43, 30-15) Saturday afternoon.
Hosley and Mueller both recorded 10 kills and senior setter Mark Schlabach (Clarence, N.Y.) dished out 38 assists.
The Pride travels back to Juniata this weekend for the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tournament. Springfield will be the fourth seed and take on top-seeded Juniata, Friday. Second-seeded NYU will play third-seeded Roger Williams in the other half of the bracket. The winner of Saturday's championship game will earn an automatic bid to the Division III National Championship being held at Eastern Mennonite University (Pa.) April 17-18.
