$1 MILLION CHALLENGE GRANT RECEIVED The Kresge Foundation has approved
Springfield
College
for a $1 million challenge grant to complete its campaign, Leadership for the 21st Century. The College must raise a total of $39 million by July 1, 2008, to receive the capstone sum. It has already received $33.4 million in gifts and commitments from alumni, friends, foundations and local businesses toward that goal. Read more.
RENOVATED SCHOO-BEMIS SCIENCE CENTER, HICKORY HALL DEDICATED Springfield College dedicated and renamed two buildings, newly renovated into state-of-the-art academic facilities, in September. Read more.
ALUMNI RECOGNIZED FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE The College will honor four outstanding alumni during Homecoming festivities this weekend. Recipients are Bridget Belgiovine G'87, Distinguished Alumna Award; Kelleyrobin Mulvihill '97, Young Alumna Award; Larry Locke Ph. D. '52, G'53, Distinguished Alumnus Award; and Philip "Buzzy" Ernst '74, Tarbell Award. Read more.
10th ANNIVERSARY OF HUMANICS IN ACTION DAY MARKED; STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF DEVOTE DAY TO COMMUNITY SERVICE The College celebrated its 10th Annual Humanics in Action Day in September, cancelling classes so that its students, faculty, and staff could devote a day to concentrated community service. #14 FIELD HOCKEY EASES PAST MOUNT HOLYOKE, 4-1 Brittany Veazie scored two goals and Eileen Jenkins added a goal and an assist to lead the Springfield College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College October 16 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game played at the Pride's Stagg Field. WOMEN'S SOCCER SHUTS OUT MOUNT HOLYOKE, 3-0 The women's soccer team extended its home shutout streak to 565:01 as it shut out Mount Holyoke, 3-0, October 16 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action. Read more.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CRUISES PAST MOUNT HOLYOKE, 3-0 Junior Aylene Ilkson (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded 15 kills and 15 digs to pace the Springfield College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke October 16 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action. The Pride won by the scores of 30-12, 30-14, 30-21. With the win, Springfield now stands at 19-6, 5-2 in league play, while the Lyons fall to 5-15, 1-6. Read more.
DISTASIO'S HAT TRICK LEADS MEN'S SOCCER PAST BRANDEIS, 4-3 Tony Distasio (Burlington, Conn.) came off the bench in the first half and recorded three goals to lead the Springfield College men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Brandeis in non-conference action October 17 at Brock-Affleck Field. SOFTBALL GARNERS NFCA TEAM ACADEMIC HONOR The Springfield College softball team was recently honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for its success in the classroom. Under the direction of head coach Kathy Mangano, the Pride was tabbed as a 2006-2007 NFCA All-Academic Team. The squad posted a cumulative GPA of 3.487 last season. Read more.
BROCKPORT SLIPS PAST FOOTBALL, 21-20 Senior Matt McCormick ran for a game-high 160 yards, registered 38 receiving yards and scored all three touchdowns to lead the SUNY Brockport football team to a 21-20 non-conference victory over Springfield College on Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium on Hall of Fame Weekend in Brockport. BRIGHAM PACES WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TO 13TH PLACE AT UALBANY INVITATIONAL Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.) finished 29th out of 216 runners at the UAlbany Invitational to lead the Springfield College women's cross country team to a 13th place finish out of 37 teams October 13. Read more.
CANTRALL TABBED NEWMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN WOMEN'S SOCCER Delaney Cantrall was chosen as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Week October 15 as she led the women's soccer team to a 2-0 record the past week. The Pride has an overall record of 12-2 in the 2007 campaign. Read more.
CHARLIE SULLIVAN RETURNS TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM STAFF Springfield College head men's volleyball coach Charlie Sullivan will rejoin the U.S. National Team as an assistant coach as the squad travels to Japan in November for the 2007 FIVB World Cup. Read more.
SIX MEMBERS INDUCTED INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME The 35th Athletics Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Saturday, October 20, during the College's Homecoming Weekend festivities. The six newest members will be Tom Hay (posthumously), Tim Murphy '78, W.F. Newhall III '80, Charles Redmond '68, Frank Robinson '48, and Christina Wielgus '74. Read more.
