COLLEGE RECEIVES $1.04 MILLION IN CONTRIBUTIONS TO NAME SPORTS COMPLEX HONORING IRV SCHMID  Springfield College renamed its new multi-purpose athletic fields the Irv Schmid Sports Complex in a ceremony that took place on the soccer field on June 9, during Reunion Weekend. Read more.

CITY OF SPRINGFIELD, SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE TO HOST 1st ANNUAL SPRINGFIELD YOUTH OLYMPICS Springfield Mayor Charles V. Ryan and Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn will be honorary co-chairmen of the 1st Annual 2007 Springfield Youth Olympics, at Springfield College, July 27 and 28. Read more.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTS WALSH, BLAKE, GRIGGS, AS OFFICERS The Springfield College Board of Trustees reelected James E. Walsh of East Longmeadow, Mass., as chair, Helen Davis Blake of Somers, Conn., and Stuart, Fla., as vice chair, and Sally M. Griggs of Northampton, Mass., as secretary at its annual meeting in May. SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES WILMINGTON CAMPUS HOLDS GRAND OPENING FOR NEW FACILITIES The Wilmington Campus of the Springfield College School of Human Services held a grand opening ceremony for its new facilities on June 2. Co-chairpersons for the event were State Senator Margaret Rose Henry and George Krupanski, president and chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware. Read more.

SCHWEITZER NAMED 2007 ASTROTURF NORTHEAST ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR Cathie Schweitzer, director of athletics, has been named one of 29 nationwide AstroTurf ADs of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and AstroTurf AD of the Year in the Northeast (Division III). She received the award in Orlando, Fla., on June 6.

COLLEGE AWARDED FULL-TIME AMERICORPS VISTA VOLUNTEER THROUGH THE MASSACHUSETTS CAMPUS COMPACT Massachusetts Campus Compact has awarded Springfield College a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer for 12 months, beginning in July 2007. Under the supervision of Charlene Elvers, director of student volunteer programs, the VISTA member will work with faculty, staff, and students to further increase the College's capacity for leadership in service to humanity. Springfield College is one of 25 campuses across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts selected as host sites for the coming program year.

Paul U. Congdon, Ed.D., Springfield College Professor Emeritus, former Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics, and retired Academic Dean, passed away on June 18, 2007.

BORSATTI, LISOWSKI NAMED ESPN The Magazine ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN (DISTRICT I) Jessica Borsatti and Jimmy Lisowski of Springfield College were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans (District I) by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Read more.

KAMPERSAL, HAY JOIN UGUCCIONI, BISHOP AS ALL-AMERICANS AT THE NCAA DIVISION III TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS Add Alex Kampersal and Nikki Hay to the names of Dominic Uguccioni and Kelsey Bishop as Springfield College athletes who have achieved All-American status at the 2007 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. BLAKE ARENA RE-SANDED, PAINTED The floor of Blake Arena, which is at the main level of the three-level domed Physical Education Complex, and the competition site for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and wrestling has been was re-sanded, polished, and painted this spring. Covered by Connor Neo-Shock maple wood that allows for a variety of activities such as athletic contests, classes, lectures and shows, the floor now sports the updated Pride logo. Read more.
