INTERNATIONAL IMPACT OF HUMANICS PHILOSOPHY EXPLORED Springfield College explored the past, present, and future international impact of its guiding philosophy of Humanics in programs throughout its campus on March 28. Humanics focuses on education of spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to others. The event was a part of "The Multicultural, Multi-ethnic, and International Aspects of the Humanics Philosophy," the year long project of the 2006-2007 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics, Dr. Richard Davila. 2007-2008 DISTINGUISHED SPRINGFIELD PROFESSOR OF HUMANICS NAMED Dr. Mimi Murray '61, G'68, professor of physical education, has been named the Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics for 2007-2008. Murray has served as president of international and national organizations in health, physical education, recreation, and dance, and of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. The Women's Sport Foundation named her one of the five Pioneers in Women's Athletics. During the efforts to secure passage of the landmark Title IX legislation, Murray was a prime mover. She also is the former National Gymnastics Coach of the Year.

STUDENT RESIDENCE BUILDING NAMED IN RECOGNITION OF GIFT FROM JOSEPH R. KAKLEY TO FUNDING CAMPAIGN Springfield College has renamed one of its on-campus graduate student residence facilities to recognize a significant gift to the College by Joseph R. Kakley, owner of J. R. Kakley & Sons, Inc.  A dedication ceremony took place Friday, April 13, at the building's east lawn on Alden Street. Read more.

SCHOLARS IN ACTION CELEBRATED ON CAMPUS More than 110 students participated in the annual Scholars in Action Day, April 17, on campus. Posters representing scholarly research, as well as musical and literary selections, were presented by undergraduates during the day-long event. Read more.

EMPLOYERS FLOCK TO JOBS FAIR FOR AREA COLLEGE STUDENTS As college seniors intensify their searches for employment after graduation, more than a hundred national and regional employers converged at Jobs Fair 2007 for students and graduates of the eight greater Springfield colleges.  Springfield College hosted the annual event, April 11, in Blake Arena.  Read more.

ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM RECEIVES CONTINUED ACCREDITATION The Springfield College Athletic Training Education Program has received continued accreditation through 2012 from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Read more.

MARK BLEGEN BECOMES NSCA STATE DIRECTOR Mark Blegen, Ph.D., Springfield College assistant professor of applied exercise science, has been elected Massachusetts state director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

NATIONAL PARKS LEADERS SPEAK National Recreation and Park Association Executive Director John Thorner presented Springfield College's annual Weckwerth Lecture on April 11 in the Townhouse Conference Room. Read more.

FREE FITNESS, HEALTH TESTS AT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE FIT FEST At the recent College Fit Fest, students took tests to learn their percentage of body fat or driving reaction time; saw a video analysis of their squat thrust effectiveness; learned dry land techniques to improve swimming; got tips on their golf putt; had facial skin analyzed, and more. The event was held on April 5 at Blake Arena. More than two dozen other exhibits and activities addressed how to achieve personal wellness.

SOFTBALL DEFEATS CLARK, 9-1, IN SECOND ROUND OF THE NEWMAC TOURNEY Sophomore Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) hit a two-run single to cap a five-run fifth to help Springfield College to a 9-1 five-inning victory over Clark University in a second round New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament game, April 25, at soggy Potter Field. MEN'S VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS STEVENS TECH IN THE MOLTON DIVISION III's TO FINISH THIRD IN THE NATION Third-seed Springfield College overcame a pair of lopsided game losses to earn a comeback victory over fourth-seed Stevens Institute of Technology in the third-place match of the 2007 Molten Division III Men's Invitational Volleyball Championship at Juniata College on April 14. WOMEN'S LACROSSE ADVANCES IN NEWMAC TOURNAMENT WITH 16-11 OPENING-ROUND WIN VS. MIT Seniors Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) and Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) each racked up four goals and one assist for five total points of offense as the fourth-seeded Pride defeated the No. 5 MIT Engineers, 16-11, April 25, in the first round of the 2007 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament at a rain-soaked Benedum Field. BASEBALL DEFEATS WESLEYAN, 6-5, ON MACKIE'S GAME-WINNER Jamie Mackie legged out a chopper with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run from third and help the Springfield College baseball team defeat Wesleyan, 6-5, April 22, in a thrilling non-conference game at SC's Berry-Allen Field. ANDREW CONSTANT'S COME-FROM-BEHIND SINGLES WIN LIFTS MEN'S TENNIS OVER BABSON, 5-4 Springfield College sophomore Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) rallied from a set down to claim a thrilling three-set tie-break victory at first singles to propel the Pride to a 5-4 win over host Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's tennis match-up on April 21.
