Steffen Seibert Head Men's Soccer Coach
What impact does playing some of the best competition in the region and the nation mean for your program?
Some of the best competition in men’s soccer is right here in our region. We have purposely scheduled top 25 nationally ranked teams in the past and will do so in the future because you have to play the best teams out there to grow as players, and as a team and program.
Our program is also gaining the reputation of a soccer powerhouse as we were ranked in our region each of the past three seasons. That greatly influences recruits to come to Springfield College because they have the opportunity to contribute to a talented and hard-working team as well as receive a quality education.
In regards to the student-athlete experience, competing against these top teams and being successful have shown our players that hard work and dedication to continually learn and improve will pay off. Perhaps the most important impact is that our players are learning the values and skills needed to be successful in the four years they are in school as well as in the next forty years.
What impact does/can giving by alumni, parents and friends have on your team? How have gifts from alumni, parents and friends advanced your team?
Donations can make a huge impact on the opportunities that our team has. We try to use every donation directly to what the players feel would help them to enjoy their experiences as student-athletes at such an amazing institution even more. As a coaching staff, we sit down with the team each year to talk over how to make the program better. Each year, our players tell us that they would love to go as a team on a trip to a foreign country.
We are currently planning a trip with the team to go to England in August and train with some of the top clubs there. Past donations also have enabled us to invest in a good video technology system that allows us to record our games, and to show the players different moments in the game.
We also were able to buy better training equipment. Every even a small donation can make a direct impact on the experience of the student-athlete. For example, we do a lot of team-building activities throughout the year. We also usually carry a larger roster than most soccer teams. Without donor support, we would have not been able to take the entire team to away games. The program would not be where it is today without the support of our alumni.
How can enhanced opportunities expand your team’s regional and national brand recognition?
Any time we can compete against top teams is an opportunity for growth and improvement. Our upcoming trip to England will give allow our players to train with very talented players. This opportunity will help the players learn new skills, which will directly translate to how we perform during the season.
What was it like to compete in post season?
We competed in post-season play two of the last three years and those were unbelievable experiences. We were able to win a post-season trophy this year. Seeing the players celebrate is something I will never forget.
