NCAA NEWMAC Cancellation

Wednesday, March 12, 2020

NCAA President Mark Emmert on Thur., Mar. 12 announced the cancellation of the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, the ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.

Also on Thursday afternoon, our Springfield College athletic programs that compete in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) were informed that their conference regular-season schedule and spring championships were cancelled.

The safety of our student-athletes and Springfield College community continues to remain our top priority. "I understand what a disappointing and challenging time this is for our student-athletes and teacher coaches," said Dr. Mary-Beth Cooper, Springfield College president. "Together, we as a community will come together and support one another during this unprecedented time.”
