Class of 1959 January 2014
It’s coming…it will be here in a “blink of an eye”…soon to become another memory and you will not want to miss it! Our 55th reunion is just around the corner (June 5-8, 2014). Since last writing you in November, we have received several very positive notes regarding the Dr. Tom Waddell ’59 Fund and additional gifts are coming in. Steve Holmes has indicated that he is planning on coming this June, as did Norm Shea, Bob Ford, Ed Myers and Ann Briley. We do not believe any have been back for a reunion since graduation…how about you??
Regarding the Dr. Tom Waddell ’59 Fund; Martin Dobrow, SC professor and author is currently researching Tom’s life for a story, “The Spirit of Tom,” soon to be written for the Triangle. If you have an anecdotal incident or story that may be of interest to Marty Dobrow, please let us know…soon, as this is a work in progress.
Concerning plans for returning to campus: Start right now! Fill out the enclosed form and let us know of your plans. Please note this is not your formal registration but assists us in our planning. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn on the Longmeadow line in Enfield, CT for our host site. Please call the Holiday Inn at 860-741-2211 no later than May 14 to receive the group rate of $101/night. Be sure to mention the “Springfield College Reunion” block. A major credit card is required to hold your reservation. It has a shuttle that will get you back and forth to campus. During the weekend, golf carts, driven by students and faculty, are available to get you all around campus. Rooms are available on campus; however, there is no air conditioning in the dorms. If you have special needs, please contact the Alumni Office immediately as they are prepared to offer assistance in a wide variety of ways.
On Friday, June 6, several academic programs will be scheduled on campus during the day, as well as the annual alumni golf tournament being held off campus. The dinner Friday evening is a great open themed event, complete with “casino” gambling with SC bucks. Saturday is filled with the Golden Triangle Breakfast (50th year and older classes), the parade of classes, followed by the all class luncheon and our Class Dinner in the evening. Plenty of time after lunch for your nap! We are working on a great speaker for our dinner…to be announced in our next letter.
We have been frugal in the past and thus, there will be no dues this year… put those bucks toward your dinner. If you can’t make the whole weekend, please try to come for part of it…let us know you are working on it!! As a further aside, you can get updates and useful information by using the website at www.springfieldcollege.edu . Click “Alumni” then “Class Pages”. Check out 1959.
Further, as we age, it becomes paramount in our “bucket list” strategies that we include estate planning in the process. And what better time to think of Springfield College than around our forthcoming reunion. The 1885 Society recognizes and honors donors who have included the college in their estate plans. In recognition, all donors receive a society pin and plaque, a timely publication offering helpful financial planning information, and invitations to the President’s Homecoming luncheon for major college donors and the annual Leadership Dinner during Reunion weekend. Great incentives and the students are the winners!
Let us summarize: More information will be coming in the next 60 days. Fill in your pre-response form and return in the enclosed business reply envelope. We’ll be looking for it! Make your gift to the Springfield College Fund. Consider making a gift to the Dr. Tom Waddell ’59 Fund and put The 1885 Society in your thought process. Agenda for an alumnus-recruit, network, public relations, $, engagement, and placement for graduates. Are you helping or do you have questions?
We do hope you are feeling well, looking forward to this new year and will be returning to campus in June.
Tom Johnson, President
Owen Houghton, VP
Jack Savoia, Reunion Chair
