Early Childhood(PreK - 2)
Springfield College early childhood education majors become licensed to teach students with or without disabilities in integrated public preschools, kindergartens, and first and second grades. The preparation begins on campus at the Springfield College Child Development Center. This provides a unique learning experience in which students gain hands-on learning experiences on-campus as early as their first year. For example, in one of their first classes, students prepare and lead science lessons for a group of 12 four- and five-year-old children, while working in pairs.
Throughout their four years, students complete field experiences in integrated preschools, kindergartens, and first and second grade classrooms. The license for early childhood education is inclusive of children with and without special needs, which is challenging, yet also rewarding. Springfield College education graduates are highly-sought, both for the preparation they’ve received as well as for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Inspiring the world’s youngest learners
Teaching young children is a career that calls for creativity, enthusiasm, patience, and flexibility. Early childhood education students major in psychology, which allows them to gain a thorough understanding of the process of child development and in-depth knowledge of how children learn, as well as the best teaching methods to employ to ensure student success.
Child growth and development, learning theories, concepts, and methods of assessing physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of young children with and without disabilities, all combined with education methods courses and fieldwork experiences, prepare Springfield College education graduates with the content knowledge and insight required to teach in today’s early childhood classrooms.
Children learn through play and exploration. Early childhood education students design learning environments that challenge children to think and make choices, and help influence children’s cognitive development during the most important years of their lives.
