Letter from the Chair to prospective students
Welcome to the website of the Springfield College Department of Humanities. Our department is home to five disciplines:
Communications and Sports Journalism (COSJ), English, Modern Languages, Philosophy, and Religion. We offer majors in English and COSJ and minors in all five disciplines.
All of our talented professors take a personal interest in each student. Above all, we work hard to provide the best education possible--an education that stresses both imaginative and critical thinking, with a curriculum that stays abreast of the changing times.
Springfield College’s mission is to educate students in spirit, mind, and body to enter into professions which serve humanity. Many graduates from our department are teachers – either at the elementary or secondary level- or have secured positions in the communications field. Others have gone on to graduate or law school or have landed positions as editors.
Preparation for leadership is also a crucial part of our mission, and there are plenty of opportunities for students to take leadership roles here on campus. One key to the success of our majors is the experience they gain in the form of internships before going onto the job market or attending graduate school. We offer a range of local and regional internship sites for English and COSJ majors that include political offices, non-profit organizations, and entertainment industries. Examples of previous intern sites include: the Springfield Symphony, NESN (New England Sports Network), WHLL (CBS Sports Radio) as well as some high-profile internships such as the U. S. Olympic Committee, ESPN, and MTV.
In addition, on campus students have the opportunity to showcase their creative and academic work by contributing to our notable publications. Our media outlets and Sigma Tau Delta honor society are also avenues where students demonstrate their talents.
I invite you to check out all of our programs!
