"As Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics for 2013-2014, my theme is 'Experiencing Humanics through Film.' As I have done over the years in my film classes and as Chairperson of the William Simpson Fine Arts Series, I will bring before students, faculty, and community audiences films which raise greater awareness and understanding of our world and which portray the values that are essential for us to be better human beings and involved citizens of our planet. I have screened films such as Last Call at the Oasis, acquainting audiences with the impending world-wide water shortage; New Year Baby, enlightening us about the Cambodian genocide; and Hoop Dreams, highlighting the acclaimed basketball film with an appearance by its award–winning director, Steve James.
"This year my first Humanics event was the screening of the film A Better Life, which deals with the plight of undocumented workers in the U.S., and followed the film with a panel of experts on immigration. Also, I am planning an Oscar gala, a film on the effects of Title IX on women’s sports, a special film event for the Learning in Later Life members, and my culminating speech on April 22, which should provide a tribute to films and the value of using them in the classroom. I expect to have student participation and a lot of surprises!"
